MRI Scans at Horton Treatment Centre

Horton Treatment Centre offers MRI scans to both NHS and Private patients in our Radiology department.

What is an MRI scan?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is one of the most advanced imaging techniques developed to date. It uses strong magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to produce detailed images of the body’s internal structures.

Do I need to prepare?

Unless told otherwise, no special preparation is needed for an MRI scan. You may continue to eat and drink as normal and take any prescribed medication.

You may prefer to come in clothing that does not have any metal fastenings as then you may not have to get changed.

What happens during the scan?

During the scan, you will be asked to lie down on the examination couch and made comfortable. It is important that you stay perfectly still for the duration of the examination. Patient movement is the biggest cause of an unsuccessful scan.

The couch will then be positioned into the centre of the magnet. Once you are in position nothing else will move or touch you. Please note the examination is quite noisy and you will be given ear protection to reduce the level of discomfort reduced by this noise.

The radiographer can both see and hear you throughout the scan, so please let them know if you have any concerns.

The examination takes around 30 minutes depending on the area of the body being scanned.

When will I get the results?

The results will not be available on the same day; these will be sent to the Doctor that referred you for the scan.

Once your scan is booked by our Radiology department, you will need to make sure you have a follow up appointment booked with your Consultant (or GP if you are a self-referring Private patient) approximately two weeks after your Ultrasound scan, or 4 to 6 weeks after an Ultrasound guided injection to discuss your results. If you have not got a follow up booked please contact us on 01295 755000 to arrange this.
