Ultrasound

Ultrasound at Horton Treatment Centre

Horton Treatment Centre offers Ultrasound scans and guided injections to both NHS and Private patients in our Radiology department.

What is an Ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive way of looking inside your body to help diagnose medical conditions and guide treatment.
An Ultrasound scanner uses high frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the organs and other structures inside the body, which can be viewed on a computer monitor.

Ultrasound is particularly useful to:
• Evaluate soft tissue
• Identify muscle and tendon injuries
• Identify fluid or inflammation in the joints
• Assess soft tissue lumps

Do I need to prepare?

Unless told otherwise, no special preparation is needed for an Ultrasound scan. You may continue to eat and drink as normal and take any prescribed medication.

What happens during the scan?

You will be taken to an Ultrasound scanning room and positioned for the examination. The Radiologist will apply clear gel to your skin before placing a hand held device, a transducer, onto the area applying gentle pressure.
During the examination you may be required to perform some simple movements to improve the quality of the imaging.
The examination should take around 20 – 40 minutes to perform.

Ultrasound guided injection

You may be referred for an Ultrasound guided injection. This will be fully discussed with you before it is performed so you are aware of the potential risks and benefit so this treatment.

As the injection involves local anaesthetic, you will not be able to drive after your appointment. Please make prior arrangements for someone to drive you home.

When will I get the results?

The results will not be available on the same day; these will be sent to the Doctor that referred you for the scan.
Once your scan is booked by our Radiology department, you will need to make sure you have a follow up appointment booked with your Consultant (or GP if you are a self-referring Private patient) approximately two weeks after your Ultrasound scan, or 4 to 6 weeks after an Ultrasound guided injection to discuss your results. If you have not got a follow up booked please contact us on 01295 755000 to arrange this.
